چکیده

We have measured the infra-red absorption spectra of chlorophyll and some of its derivatives in order to obtain information useful for eventual understanding of reversible transformations of this pigment. Such transformations are (a) Moliseh phase test, (b) bleaching by FeCl3, and (c) photochemical reduction by ascorbic acid-"Krasnovsky reaction" (10, 13, 16). Only in the case of the phase test is there evidence of the specific group involved (the cyclopentanone ring). Whether this ring is involved in the other reactions is not known. However, if the C=O bands in the spectrum of the parent substance are correctly assigned, any change in this ring should be apparent from the infra-red spectrum of the intermediate. To obtain unequivocal assignments of the C=O stretching bands we prepared and studied appropriate derivatives. In addition we studied the influence of solvent on the spectrum and found strong effects in the C=O region. These solvent effects were not studied by earlier investigators (18, 19). The complexity of the spectra below 1600 cm-' is so great that we have not attempted to assign the bands. Spectra are presented from 650 to 3800 cm-1 in order to make the data available for future comparisons (except in cases of chlorophyll a in ethyl ether and ethyl pheophorbide a-oxime in CHCl3).

The Absorption Spectra of Hemoglobin and Its Derivatives in the Visible and near Infra-red Regions

Since the pioneering investigations of Vierordt and of Hiifner and his group, numerous reports on the absorption spectra of hemoglobin and its derivatives have appeared in the literature. A detailed summary of these reports is to be found in Heilmeyer’s monograph (1). For the most part these investigations have been confined to the visible portion of the spectrum, although in a few cases the ob...

Infra-red Absorption Spectra of Steroids

In this paper, the infra-red absorption spectra of a number of crystalline natural estrogens are presented and considered in relation to chemical structure. As a group, the natural estrogens are distinguished chemically from other steroids by the benzenoid structure of Ring A, which gives rise to certain infra-red absorption bands by which their spectra may be differentiated from those of other...

A Rapid Spectrophotometric 5me’l’i101> for the Determination of Methemoglobin and Carbonylhemoglobin in Blood

Little use has thus far been made of the near infra-red spectrum for the identification and determination of hemoglobin and its derivatives BJ means of infra-red photography Eggert (1) established the transparency of carbon monoxide-saturated blood and used this property for the qualitative detection of carbon monoxide poisoning.. Eggert’s ‘observations were extended and placed on a more quanti...

Haems and chlorophylls: comparison of function and formation.

In 1844 Verdeill reported that acid treatment of chlorophyll or haem yielded apparently similar red compounds; he even postulated that chlorophylls would contain iron. Hoppe-Seyler2 confirmed the apparent similarity of acid derivatives of haems and chlorophylls from their light absorption characteristics, a point rather overshadowing the discovery at the same time by McMunn3 of cytochromes, ano...

A new method for Eosin preparation and examination of its absorption and emission spectra

Eosin is one of the original dyes of xanthenes derivatives. It is also one of the main derivatives of fluorescein and has brilliant fluorescence. Eosin disodium salt called "Eosin Y" is the most useful form of this compound. In common procedures, eosin is usually obtained by the action of bromine on fluorescein, which has not good yield and purity degree. In this research, it is prepared by the...
